Muslims are responsible for what ails Islam

The Tuesday headline on the front page of India’s Urdu Times bestexpressed the sentiments of many Muslims around the world today.
“American Muslims score huge victory over Trump” it read.
Below was a picture of Muslims praying as a group at New York’s JFKAirport, while non-Muslim protesters against U.S. President DonaldTrump’s so-called Muslim ban looked on.
At any other time, Muslim men praying in public on a sidewalk, or in aparking lot, would arouse curiosity, if not anger, at the exhibitionistnature of the prayer.
But Muslim men at prayer in public places now excites the left. It’s as if we Muslims have become clowns in a circus.
These days, the left and liberal segments of North American societytreat Muslims as if we are endangered Beluga whales; exotic species atrisk of extinction, due to regulations enacted by the evil Trump.
As Indian journalist Rahoul Roshan has pointed out, “Left-liberalismis that outer paint that makes the truth ... redundant. The paintbecomes the truth. And those, who insist that the paint is just an outerfacade, are accused of belonging to the ‘post truth’ world.”
So for now, we Muslims who are so inclined, can indulge in our hatredfor all things Western, knowing the West’s “Millionaire Marxists” willvouch for the sincerity of our contempt for individual liberty, genderequality, secular liberal democracy, gay rights, freedom of religion andfrom religion.
Encouraged by widespread white guilt, hostility towards America is now in full throttle among many Muslims.
If social media is any guide to gauging sentiments, no U.S. presidentin recent memory has garnered so much hate among Muslims as Trump. Manysay they see in Trump the embodiment of Satan on earth.
Outwardly, the anger is over Trump’s executive order that banscitizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, in a bid to make Americasafe from “radical Islamic terrorists”.
The truth is, we Muslims are often just as angry at our ownimpotence, our refusal to be part of the world family of nations asequals, rather than as Allah’s chosen people, who have little to showfor our supposed superiority.
But back to Trump’s executive order. Is it a “Muslim ban” as his critics say? Let me suggest why they are wrong:
First, the order does not exclude Muslims from all 57 Islamic nationsfrom entering the U.S. It applies only to Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya,Somalia, Syria and Yemen, for 90 days.
Muslims from countries such as Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan remain unaffected.
Second, regarding refugees, the executive order is a temporary haltof the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), for 120 days.
Interestingly, within days of Trump’s “Muslim ban”, Kuwait made acopycat move, banning visas to residents of Pakistan and several otherplaces where Islamic terrorism festers.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullahbin Zayed, told Al-Jazeera, the American president’s order was notIslamophobic.
The reality is, we Muslims bear responsibility for much of what is wrong with Islam today, and it’s time we acknowledged it.
We know exactly what we mean when we pray to Allah every Friday, asking him to give us victory over the “Kaafirs”.
Let us not pretend that we do not.
Let us begin by acknowledging we see the root problem, and that the problem is not with the United States, but with us.
